Chapter 13

Team Adventure Club made their way across town, bypassing major roads and cutting through back alleys and side streets as they worked their way to the military camp. They were amazed that one small alien projectile could do so much damage. Every structure, person, vehicle, and thing was covered in a thick sarcophagus of ice.

Robbie’s wrist communicator suddenly beeped; the radar showed an oncoming vehicle headed their way. “Everybody down!” They all dove behind ice-laden bushes on the side of the road, waiting until long after the Jeep cruised past to re-emerge.

“That was close!” Leanne stared long after the Jeep’s tail lights had disappeared over the horizon. It has gone in the direction of the beach.

Once they were within a few blocks of the camp, they started to hear the commotion of the busy soldiers. The ambient light coming off the base camp gave an eerie glow to this side of town. Max looked at his TAC COM checking for movement nearby. “Coast is clear.”

They kept moving, sticking to the shadows to avoid being noticed. Finally, they made it to a huge house just across the street from the base camp, where they took a moment to regroup. “Uncle Max, what’s the plan once we get in?” Carrie asked.

“We find the alien device.”

“Then what? We can’t touch it, remember?” Leanne rubbed at her arms. The temperature was continuing to drop as time went on.

“I haven’t figured that part out yet,” Uncle Max admitted with a sigh.

“Well, if we can’t touch it, then that means the military can’t touch it either,” Robbie pointed out.

“True.” Uncle Max patted him on the back. “I could get next to it and toss an OD-ADD down. Then it would be contained inside.”

“With you inside?” Carrie asked. “You would be stuck inside your magic shield bubble forever!”

Uncle Max started to respond, then froze. “Shhh.” He motioned to everyone to freeze. His TAC COM didn’t show anything, but he didn’t want to risk it.

“Did you hear footsteps?” Leanne whispered.

It was too late to answer her. Uncle Max turned to find a team of armed men Carrie and Leanne both screamed, and Robbie smacked his communicator. “I thought you said these things detected life forms, Max!”

“Freeze!” one of the soldiers yelled.

They all stopped moving, that is, until Robbie began giggling. “Something funny, boy?” The soldier glared at him.

“You said ‘freeze.’ Everything is frozen. Classic!” Robbie continued to chuckle.

Carrie nudged him, giving him a glare.

“Everyone shut up and stop moving!” the soldier yelled again. He motioned to one of his comrades. “Call this in. We need transport.”

“Listen, can’t you let the kids go and just take me in?” Uncle Max peered at the name patch sewn onto the soldier’s uniform. “Mr. Pegg?”

“It’s Military Police Officer Pegg, and I’m afraid not. We have to take you all in. I’ll make sure you’re treated right.” When MP Officer Pegg looked at Carrie and Leanne, his face and voice softened a bit. “Ladies, it’s okay. We’re not going to hurt you. We’re just on a routine surveillance mission.
